*About the event*

*ABSTRACT:   *Chip design is one of the most fascinating application areas of mathematical optimization and combinatorial optimization in particular.  Virtually all classical combinatorial optimization problems, and many new ones, occur naturally as subtasks.  We will present the main mathematical ideas used in a collection of algorithms called BonnTools, which are used to design many of the most complex integrated circuits in industry. An emphasis will be put on the construction of short and fast broadcast trees for electrical signals.

*SPEAKER:  * After studying Mathematics and Computer Science in Münster until the intermediate diploma, Stephan Held received a diploma and doctoral degree in Mathematics from the University of Bonn in 2001 and 2008 respectively.  From 2009 to 2010 he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, USA. Since 2010, Stephan Held is a Juniorprofessor for Discrete Optimization at the University of Bonn, leading the group for timing optimization in chip design.
